Singing Rainbow
A collaborative multiplayer dome game created by A MAZE. and Katpatat Collective.

This work is inspired by crowd games. This audio-reactive playful art piece brings people together to sing along different notes. The more you sync with the sound pattern the more bright and dense you paint colors to the dome and move the clouds above away. The game has 7 levels as a rainbow has colors. The rainbow symbolizes ethnic and racial diversity, to express LGBTQ identity and pride, also it is a symbol for happiness, feelings of togetherness, hope, and good fortune. This interactive artwork is designed by Thorsten S. Wiedemann and developed by Titouan Millet and Lisa Mantel, thanks to the head start of Zuraida Buter.

This installation will run at the Kuppelhalle throughout the festival. Between sessions, A MAZE. visitors will be able to take the microphone and experiment with the artwork projected on the dome ceiling of the Kuppelhalle. Gather people around (or fly solo), lie down and hum, sing or do poetic readings and enjoy the mesmerising visions.

Future Dance of Nostalgia
Through the research on work songs in which singing/chanting helps choreograph the repetitive manual labour, the artist tries to trace out how our moving bodies used to cooperate in the extinct activities of production. From here she questions: how do we preserve the body movements and restore our moving bodies as the living archives? Can we restore it on this body of you and me, now and here?

Future Dance of Nostalgia is a dancing game which invites audience to perform the choreography that extracts and abstracts the movements found in the pre-industrial, heavy physical labour, and work songs. Motion tracking technology allows the body movements to be quantified, measured, and evaluated. Historical archives of work songs provide the inspiration for the music that renders the old tales and melodies into clubbing beats that lead the dance.

Through ethnographic research into work songs and the moving body, the project draws much needed attention to alternative historical archives of our times. The gaming technology, visual, and music, bring people closer to the past through a tangible and modern experience. The work also brings fun and togetherness to audience through public participatory dance sessions and interactive gameplay.

A 1960s Minecraft Experience: What is the Fun Palace?
In 1964, the legendary London theatre maker Joan Littlewood teamed up with the renowned avant-guard architect Cedric Price and cybernetics pioneer Gordon Pask to create a plan for an epic anti-disneyland theme park for the people. The Fun Palace was never built, and it forever lives on in archival documents and sketches as one of the great examples of speculative architecture… until now. In 2023 the TAG MC Bloc created a public survival multiplayer (SMP) server interpreting the original site and sketches for the Fun Palace in Modded Minecraft (Forge 1.18.2). Players were invited to spend 60 days bringing the Fun Palace to life. Our presentation reports on the experience showing a different kind of Minecraft, a different sort of collaborative gaming experience, and hope for continuing the dream of the fun palace!

MetaSounds in Unreal: Modular synths, modular sound, interactive music - all inside Unreal Engine
UPDATED TO VIRTUAL/PALESTINE LINKUP:
Peter is currently in Bethlehem, Palestine (in the West Bank) and will offer the workshop from there. Leading up to the Sounds of Places event at Wonder Cabinet, we'll show you not only what Unreal can do with music but also how captured sounds and objects/models from the location can be incorporated in the virtual world.

In this workshop, we’ll explore Unreal’s MetaSounds entirely from that musical perspective. It’s the hybrid of a full game engine and a modular synth. And that means Unreal Engine now can become a new kind of playground for exploring how to make interactive sound and music. Thanks to that hybrid approach, you might be an Unreal user/game dev OR you might be a musician/producer/sound artist/DJ. Or you even might be both.

We’ll cover the basics of how MetaSounds works, then try a mini-game jam to quickly hack some musical toys from provided template examples, mashing up gaming and music making.

AUDIENCE: Music and sound folks curious about Unreal Engine, game dev, and generative sound for games. And Unreal Engine and game devs curious about music and sound.

REQUIREMENTS: No previous experience needed! This is also a chance to meet potential collaborators with other skills

BRING: Please follow provided instructions for installing Unreal Engine on your machine in advance of the workshop/lab, and have this system up and running on a compatible macOS/Linux/Windows notebook. Bring your computer, power plug and headphones. This is a hands-on session so participation & preparation is essential.

PREP INSTRUCTIONS:
Please install Unreal Engine 5.3 or 5.4 on your platform of choice. (5.4 is the current version and represents the stable version of MetaSounds, but 5.3 is functionally identical for our purposes)& install Unreal Engine 5.1 (stable) first! You can do this for free via the Epic Games Launcher.

On the Mac, install Xcode from the App Store and run it if you haven't already. There's also a weird issue on the Mac where Unreal Engine can't always find Metal - try what's detailed here (https://forums.unrealengine.com/t/cant-find-xcode-install-for-metal-compiler/477836/14) (including the command line fix).

Try launching Unreal Engine and creating (any) new project from the samples (https://docs.unrealengine.com/5.1/en-US/creating-a-new-project-in-unreal-engine/). Now you're ready for the workshop!

For this workshop online registration is not required to attend. The spots will be assigned on a first-come first-served basis, so make sure to be at the workshop location at least 10 minutes before the starting time.

  1.  It's time for Gæmz @A MAZE./Berlin! Let's hang out and talk about what we've been up to. It's a short one but you can still talk about the projects you've worked on–but you can also tell us where you've been to or what you've been playing etc. If you have a prototype (work-in-progress)/finished work that you want to share/playtest/get feedback, you should totally bring it! New to Gæmz? It’s a hangout/social gathering event and a community for the people who are into art/experimental/alternative games, playful media, and d0peshit founded in 2019 by Nomi. If you are familiar with Gæmz, the event usually runs for roughly 3 hours in total and 1 hour of which is usually spent on ice breaker sesh/waiting for people. We'll skip that bit this time. So we advise you to come on time!
  2. So here's a handy checklist for attending the event:
    • You feeling fit & in a healthy body condition (in your standards)
    • A MAZE./Berlin ticket
    • Recommended: Stuff you'd like to show or a device that allows you to show them (e.g. laptop, tablet, tower pc, paper prototype, altctrl stuff, book, canvas, etc.)
  3. Here’s the list of what we might do:
    • A brief introduction of Gæmz Meetup by Nomi
    • We’ll talk about what we’ve been up to (everyone can talk for up to 2 minutes as long as the time allows. We encourage everyone to introduce their names (and maybe their favourite colour or something) at least so that we’ll all get to know you a little bit!
  4.  I think that's all you need! If you have any questions, feel free to email us at gaemzmu@gmail.com. We are also on X (Twitter), Instagram (both @gaemzmu), Bluesky (gaemz.bsky.social) Facebook (all @gaemzmu) and Mastodon (@gaemz@mastodon.online). Pixel
Today’s screens, by creating ever-increasing pixel densities, the pixel is completely overlooked. This experimental game, on the other hand, gives it prominence and even in displays of extremely high density and resources barely perceived by the human eye, the pixel is staged, which is the minimum representation of any digital work.

Since each element in the game is represented by a pixel, this is also the largest element in the interface; there is nothing else: there is no visible score, there is no running time, only pixels. The whole game can represent a classic game of ships, or also a person struggling in vain against the heat of the planet, or whatever each player can imagine. The pixels agree to be representatives of whatever players want.

Pixel seeks that when you play, you can perceive the power of what you are moving, of what appears to be a minimal glimpse of light and at the same time is the fundamental piece of everything that is digitally represented on a screen.

AUTONOMOUS AVATAR

Can machines learn on their own? Is an algorithm able to hallucinate? What if our lives
were just a computer's dream? The hybrid dance performance AUTONOMOUS AVATAR
deals with these questions. Two performers discover their human bodies until they
transcend into superhuman forms. The encounter with these new digital deities takes
place on the threshold between analog and virtual realities.
Berlin-based artist Tobias Staab has developed the choreography together with the
dancers Dasniya Sommer and Corey Scott-Gilbert. Using live motion capture technology,
their organic physiognomies are combined with the immaterial bodies of the avatars.
The texts were created on the basis of a story by Jorge Luis Borges and in close
collaboration with various artificial intelligences. The spoken and sung sounds derive from
on a number of voice recordings made with the award winning actress Sandra Hüller. The
score was conceived and arranged by composer Beni Brachtel.

The A MAZE. Bazaar - 5. International Arthouse Games Market is a business module of A MAZE. Connect. It got awarded as part of the Innovative Formats 2024 competition of the Berlin Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy and Enterprises and is the only and first market for arthouse games, independent games and playful media productions which gives authors and digital artists the opportunity to meet with publishers, funding institutions, art institutions and collaborators. Our goal is to bring culture and games industry closer together.
The marketplace will be open on Thursday 9th and Friday, 10th of May from 10:00-16:00 CEST at Silent Green, Mars Restaurant and Cubus.

Line up before official meeting times: (but of course make your dates as you want)
  • :: CANCELLED :: 10:15 - 10:45 Game.Net Transatlantik (by Florian Masuth) ::CANCELLED ::
  • 11:00 - 11:30 Small but mighty: Kickstarter tales from our indie creators (by Elina Roinioti and Michael Liebe)
Everybody knows the story of David and Goliath, but nobody seems to care how David overcame his fear of facing the Philistine giant and prepared for his battle. Solo developers and small game dev teams are, in principle, the beautiful weirdo and creative Davids of the contemporary games industry, struggling to be heard and be seen. Αnd it is true that sometimes the tale doesn’t have a happy ending. But more often than not, small (funding) goals become outstanding achievements. In this workshop, we will showcase indie Kickstarter campaigns and discuss their journey through tips and tricks on how to be better prepared against the ongoing challenges.
  • 11:45 - 12:15 How to Pitch Your Stuff (by Gwen Foster)
You don't need to have a pitching voice, here's some tips on how to create a pitch that best describes your work

We are the annual marketplace where game creators, digital artists, virtual worldbuilders can either connect to publishers and labels or funding institutions, festivals and curators, but also finding new opportunities in working on theater- or museums projects. Our major goal is to create a sustainable environment for playful media creators, and game studios to get their works properly produced, released and exhibited.

Thanks for the cooperation with MeetToMatch. Additional Bazaar ticket for only 45€. LINK.

Games for Future: towards a solarpunk gaming manifest
The man-made climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time. In every domain, we're forced to question the status quo, and the gaming industry is no exception. In this workshop, we aim to tackle a fundamental question: How can we, as a sensitive and self-reflective community of independent game developers, contribute to shaping a sustainable future for both our medium and our planet? Inspired by the positive utopias of solarpunk, we want to look into a hopeful future and discuss how games might play a positive part in it. This conversation could pave the way for a solarpunk gaming manifesto.

BRING: Something to write: Pen+Paper or Laptop/Smartphone

Data Garden
A text-less comic-game hybrid about data, interaction and digital identity. In this click & click adventure you will have a single button to advance in the story: a virtual routine of a content consumer who lives their day through different platforms that harvest their data.

This data will end up reflected in a garden, the Data Garden. A growing ecosystem where everything endures. A reflection of your digital self that knows more about you than yourself.

This is the debut game of the narrative studio Shaman Garage. They use the constrains of only using one button as input and no text to bring us this experimental story driven puzzle game. Estimated play time 10-15 minutes.

PLAYING WITH OUR LIVES
In this constant end boss fight you operate a lignite excavator in a surface coal mine. There is a huge amount of money to be made and everything that gets between you and those potential profits has to be destroyed. Good luck figuring out how to win.
PLAYING WITH OUR LIVES is a warning that the current game we play with our climate can not be won within the rulesets we are currently playing in. Games have mechanics that can’t be transferred to the real life, there aren’t infinite resources, no save-states or unlimited restarts. In the real life you have to live with the consequences of your own actions.

Swipe the Pain Away
This interactive installation runs synchronously on 9 smartphones. The devices are fixed in a grid on a pedestal and a harmonious, virtual delirium initially plays out on their screens. The player can drift off into various AI-generated worlds and truths. However, this harmony is soon shattered by suddenly popping up disaster scenarios. Cell phone videos of devastating floods, such as those that have become rampant in the wake of the climate catastrophe in recent years, flood the screens like Instagram stories. Initially sporadically and then increasingly frequently, the ideal digital world is confronted with a harsh and brutal reality. In a way, AI simulations and disaster videos have the same hypnotic attraction. No wonder, since the field of tension between environmental dystopianism and AI tech utopianism is a field that is cultivated and harvested by the attention extractivism industry.

Paradoxically, the only action left to the player in these events is to swipe the disaster stories off the screen, as is familiar from social media apps. The hermetic game loop intensifies until the events flood all channels like a torrent. Here, the installation concept addresses how human consciousness tends to repress itself when overwhelmed by the complexity of the global situation, instead of moving into action. The escapist nature of media production and a belief in technology and progress that is as tempting as it is fatal are critically juxtaposed in the form of these lucid AI dreams. The simulation comes full circle when the question of the inevitability of this end finally appears on the screen and a new beginning is offered via swipe.

Interactive Storytelling
Decide, activate, solve, answer - Interactive storytelling primarily means that listeners and viewers must become active participants in an experience to advance or even influence the narrative. In this workshop, we will explore which aspects of conventional storytelling could become interactive levers and what possibilities arise from them. To do this, we will develop our own small prototypes.

AUDIENCE: Anyone who is happy to spend some time on (re-)focusing on storytelling in games and interactive experiences. All fields of expertise are welcome.

REQUIREMENTS: None

BRING: If you have it, a smartphone with Instagram access. But there is no need to install it only for this workshop though.

For this workshop online registration is not required to attend. The spots will be assigned on a first-come first-served basis, so make sure to be at the workshop location at least 10 minutes before the starting time.

The Making of a Collaborative Alternative Controller
During this workshop, we will create a collaborative and modular alternative controller by building directly each inputs from scratch with craft material (buttons, pressure sensors, potentiometers). Each participant will be in charge of crafting one or several inputs, then we will connect everything together. The final creation will be a collective reinvention of the Musical Steps installation, a sandbox musical game.

AUDIENCE: This workshop focuses on people who want to initiate themselves to alternative controllers from the basics.

REQUIREMENTS: No requirements

BRING: No need to bring specific hardware. However if you have ideas to add to the project, you can bring what you think can match (computer, music instrument, objects to hack, etc).

For this workshop online registration is not required to attend. The spots will be assigned on a first-come first-served basis, so make sure to be at the workshop location at least 10 minutes before the starting time.

Undead and beautiful: making live art, together
This interactive performance provides a means to care for, and adorn another participant both physically and digitally. The work is designed to form connection quickly - but usually performed in a 1 to 1 live art performance setting. Bringing it into a space with more audience is an experiment in forming connections - can we get to know each other and break through the benign? Can we make beautiful vignettes of our cared for participants with meaning? What will we learn about each other?

Be guided through the process carefully, with care and consent.

Organize! Changing the Game Industry with Unions and Worker Co-ops
We were told to find a job we love so we don’t have to work a day in our lives. This was a lie. We are overworked, underpaid, burned out, and seen as disposable by the people that profit from our labor. This is by design! But it doesn’t have to be that way. In this panel, we will discuss how we can change our work for the better by organizing in unions and worker cooperatives. We will have an open conversation about creating workplaces that put ownership, equity, and health first.

LARP - Things from the Forest

Capacity is limited. If you are registered* to join, then we expect you want to join the LARP. If you can't make it please unregister to make space for other participants.
*registering = signing up here on this page on Sched.

In this short form larp you'll be playing either a human or a thing from the forest, fae like creatures that serve their own rules and have troubles understanding the human world. The game is about exploration and playfulness.
As part of the game, there will be a series of workshops that prepare you for the game and help you come up with your characters - no other preperation or things you bring with you are required.

The game is played over multiple scenes which forward the collaboratively told story - you'll portray your characters and interact with each other in mostly non-verbal ways.

Fantasia Malware: Fever Loop Fountain #1: The Life of Saint Fiona Bianco Xena
The Life of Saint Fiona Bianco Xena” tells the controversial life story of the fictional Saint Fiona. Three experts on their sacred history fight over the right to determine their heritage. Who was Fiona? DIY hormone hacker and trans revolutionary? World-famous orchid collector or mythical figure? The three members of Fantasia Malware are at the mercy of the video game systems they have built to control their performance. They debate, dance and rumble, answer quiz questions and summon dead spirits in a wild battle royale*. Saint Fiona Bianco Xena's story is presented in an unholy panorama that is at once holy and absurd. Originally commissioned in 2021 by London's National Gallery X and the Royal Opera's Audience Lab as a web-based game, "The Life of Saint Fiona Bianco". In 2024, Fantasia Malware will perform a video game performance of the original at HAU2 for the first time. This evening is the start of the “Fever Loop Fountain” series, which will continue in September and October at HAU Hebbel am Ufer. As part of this, Fantasia Malware will present two more new video game performances. “The Life of Saint Fiona Bianco Xena” is presented in co-production with the A MAZE. . The 13th festival edition for “Games and Playful Media” will take place between August 8th and 11th. May 2024 in Silent Green and Panke. A MAZE. / BERLIN is the most important festival for arthouse games in the country and has a large international reach and community. For this event you have to get a special ticket. Meth Math
The esoteric trio, composed of vocalist Angelicá Ballesteros and producers Bonsai Babies and error.error, met and developed their work in the Mexican city of Hermosillo, where they grew up. Chupetones their debut LP, builds on the dichotomy the Mexican trio has always existed in: a gothic party for crying (llorando) and dancing (perreando). The nine songs that make up this new collection are at once odes to heartbreak and invitations to the deep darkness of a post-apocalyptic club. Chupetones means »love bites,« aka hickeys in English, and will be out on February 2nd on In Real Life.
