UPDATED TO VIRTUAL/PALESTINE LINKUP:
Peter is currently in Bethlehem, Palestine (in the West Bank) and will offer the workshop from there. Leading up to the Sounds of Places event at Wonder Cabinet, we'll show you not only what Unreal can do with music but also how captured sounds and objects/models from the location can be incorporated in the virtual world.

In this workshop, we’ll explore Unreal’s MetaSounds entirely from that musical perspective. It’s the hybrid of a full game engine and a modular synth. And that means Unreal Engine now can become a new kind of playground for exploring how to make interactive sound and music. Thanks to that hybrid approach, you might be an Unreal user/game dev OR you might be a musician/producer/sound artist/DJ. Or you even might be both.

We’ll cover the basics of how MetaSounds works, then try a mini-game jam to quickly hack some musical toys from provided template examples, mashing up gaming and music making.

AUDIENCE: Music and sound folks curious about Unreal Engine, game dev, and generative sound for games. And Unreal Engine and game devs curious about music and sound.

REQUIREMENTS: No previous experience needed! This is also a chance to meet potential collaborators with other skills

BRING: Please follow provided instructions for installing Unreal Engine on your machine in advance of the workshop/lab, and have this system up and running on a compatible macOS/Linux/Windows notebook. Bring your computer, power plug and headphones. This is a hands-on session so participation & preparation is essential.

PREP INSTRUCTIONS:
Please install Unreal Engine 5.3 or 5.4 on your platform of choice. (5.4 is the current version and represents the stable version of MetaSounds, but 5.3 is functionally identical for our purposes)& install Unreal Engine 5.1 (stable) first! You can do this for free via the Epic Games Launcher.

On the Mac, install Xcode from the App Store and run it if you haven't already. There's also a weird issue on the Mac where Unreal Engine can't always find Metal - try what's detailed here (https://forums.unrealengine.com/t/cant-find-xcode-install-for-metal-compiler/477836/14) (including the command line fix).

Try launching Unreal Engine and creating (any) new project from the samples (https://docs.unrealengine.com/5.1/en-US/creating-a-new-project-in-unreal-engine/). Now you're ready for the workshop!

For this workshop online registration is not required to attend. The spots will be assigned on a first-come first-served basis, so make sure to be at the workshop location at least 10 minutes before the starting time.
